The original inspiration

The people of Mondas are sold stuff. Buy this, buy that. Total consumerism. Adverts practically hypnotise people. The latest look is for cybernetic enhancements. People can live forever. That’s the dream they’re selling you.

But it’s a false dream. While there are plenty that can afford to follow that lifestyle, there are plenty that can’t. What happens to them? They live in highrise boxes eating nutrient pills and ‘plugging’ in every night after work. And at work, they just plug in anyway.

One worker at Cybus Industries discovers that they are just slaves to the master computer. When they plug in, they aren’t doing anything meaningful, they just provide power for the machine.

The Dalek has contacted him and promised him a better life. Maybe that’s the handle he contacts him under. ‘Better life’. The Dalek plants a bomb in his mind and blows part of Cybus computer industries apart. Now the computer goes to defence mode and deploys troops. And enlists others.
I've always been interested in how the Cybermen came to be. We've seen them emerge on an alternate Earth in Rise of the Cybermen and Big Finish's excellent Spare Parts gives us a glimpse of Mondas out in space. I wanted to do a combination of the two.
The original storyline was quite different. While Captain John had the freedom to move about, the Doctor would find himself with the celebrity elite of Mondas and see the cosmetic cybernetic effects on those with money. I decided to remove that part of the story in order to simplify the tale and to give the Doctor more to do than just be stuck at a penthouse party.

The script was completed on 5 July 2012.

The TARDIS interior scenes were shot first (along with all the TARDIS scenes for Daleks v Cybermen) on 1 September 2012.
Next up were the Cyber-drone interiors shot on 15 Nov 2012 as were all Cyber-ship interiors for the Daleks v Cybermen series.
The bulk of the filming for this particular story took place on 30 Jan 2013.
For the Mondas sets, I wanted something that looked high-tech but still recognisable. To dress the place and give it a sense of consumerism I looked found and doctored images that sexualise robotics, figuring that for Mondasians at the time spare part surgery was much more of a fashion thing than a necessity.
The only remaining setting was the Dalek hideout. For this I modified an existing set that I'd used as Space Daddy's shop in The Eternal Quest. This was shot on 31 Jan 2013.

During the editing I realised there was a lot I needed to cram into every page. As such, some of the images have come out a little small while some scenes (including the first TARDIS scene) have been chopped down.
I did however add some dialogue between the Doctor and Captain John adding to their mutual antagonism.
The prop phones that everyone is holding are the scanner from the Sarah Jane Adventures figures. The Userdeck (originally UserDec) interfaces are heavily based on Facebook.

The story was originally planned to be shown in April and May but the schedule was rejigged to accommodate the anniversary story (planned for November) by setting April aside for a Star Trek episode.
As such, part one was posted 23 May with part two following a few days early on June 21st.
Given the long gap between episodes, I decided to drum up a bit of interest and intrigue the night before part one aired with this cryptic Facebook picture.

As with all the AFT's 5th Doctor stories since 2008, this story is set in a period at the end of The Awakening where the Doctor has left Tegan and Turlough holidaying in Little Hodcombe. He'll get back to them, eventually.
In the continuity of the Dalek/Cyber war, it follows from The Siege of Skaro. The Daleks have been brutally attacked on Skaro and in vengeance, seek to use their time travel skills against their enemy.
