The Doctor and Dari discover a ship hanging in space, its crew unconscious. What disaster has befallen them? Which of the crew is really an undercover investigator? And what deadly secret is hidden in the Dark Matter? - original blurb

Originally shown October, November and December 2002, this was the AFT debut of the (then) current Doctor.
The story was removed when the site was taken down in 2007. It was intended that the McGann stories would be reposted in order but the 'If' arc was superseded by the bigger event stories The Dalek Invasion of Time, Type Forty and The Infinity Program.
By that time an official McGann figure was assured and in comparison, I felt my customs didn't really cut the mustard so the story was never reposted until the AFT's tenth Anniversary on 23 November 2011.

As with many of the early AFT stories, Darkness started out as a potential toy video, an extension of videos I'd made over the previous few years which had introduced the 8th Doctor's companion Dari in the first place.
The If arc was kind of mapped out backwards starting with the need to introduce new companion Jess in the third story. For that, the If was created and fed into existing storylines, Evolution and here in Darkness.

Like most of the early AFTs Darkness was shot using a beaten up old video camera so a lot of the images are low resolution.
The sets are a mixed bag of walls left behind by students on a set design course, the water bucket from a Vax and shelves from a bathroom capinet.
The ship is a backpack from a Star Wars accessory pack.
I made a schematic diagram that appears on the screen in part one.

The If was originally called the Hunger.
When I devised the If arc, I was going to run it over several Doctors. This story would have fallen to the 5th Doctor until I decided to give the 8th Doctor a bit of a run on the site.
The shadow beast is made in photoshop using several images of the Alien Queen figure particularly its tail.

A NEW COMPANION

Dari, or Vendari 63 to give her her full name was introduced in one of my toy videos and has quite a back story.
In the late 22nd Century, a disaster looks set to befall the human race and the richest and most powerful families create clones of themselves in suspended animation to escape the catastrophe. As it transpires, the cataclysm is averted and the clones no longer needed. But on the eve of their planned termination, they are released from their stasis and demand human rights. They are grudgingly given basic rights and some meagre land.
Dari is the illegitimate child of a clone mother and a norm father. As such she has been rejected by both societies and is independent and untrusting. Something she overcomes during her time with the Doctor.
In terms of the 8th Doctor's continuity, the TV Movie comes first (obviously) followed by the 5" figure adventures that began on the AFT in 2011. Sometime after that comes the toy videos I made (you never know they may one day end up on YouTube) and after all that comes this adventure and all subsequent AFT 8th Doctor tales.
