No video this time I'm afraid. No time to edit it. So it's back to the old style for now.

11th Doctor
Amy
Amelia Pond (DWE Exclusive)
Hawthorne
Peter The Winder
Smilers
Claws- Primeval Silurian Scorpion
Barney- Jack Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
Son- Connor (Primeval series 1)
Mum- Grandma Conolly
The story uses the two faced Smilers but in shots where there are four of them, you can see the bodies of one faced Smilers as well, the heads having been taken and repainted.
The Smiler booth sadly proved too short for Smilers to comfortably appear in so for close ups, the booth is on a raised platform with the Smiler standing in a hole. For wide shots the Smiler is actually a cut out photo.

Episode one was posted on 23 July with part two following a little later than planned on 26 August, delayed partly because I haven't had time to edit the Behind the scenes video- hence the old style page.

While a lot of series 5 fell flat with me, the concept of Starship UK was a strong one- a mix of futuristic with a kind of 'wartime' Britishness. Also with the amount of figures released from that one story, there's the potential to make Starship UK a new regular destination for the Doctor and Amy, almost like the UNIT family of the Pertwee era.
Additionally the Smilers were potentially a good monster, woefully misused in The Beast Below. They were the sinister agents of a regime that turned out to be not so bad after all thereby robbing these modern monsters of any threat or monstrousness. I wanted a story that would do them justice and make them more scary and dangerous.
The original storyline (completed on 5 May 2011) was slightly different and didn't contain the Barney/ Claws subplot. The Smilers had become corrupted when an old Earth satelite crashed into the tallest building on the station. This was changed to the box of ephemercite (note the design of the box) when I came up with the Amy/Amelia arc. This also created the need for the opening scene in the TARDIS that follows from the cliffhanger at the end of Amy Alone and the final scene mentioning the daleks, which had originally been Amy asking to go and visit Liz 10.
While it ended up with it's original title- the straightforward Return To Starship UK- other titles were considered including When You're Smiling and The Beast Above

I still don't own the TARDIS control room and probably never will. The opening scene uses a printout I made of the TARDIS entrance. The first scene was the first to be shot on 23 May 2011.
The lower street where the TARDIS lands was filmed on 25th May with the Kent Streets where the Doctor meets Barney and Amy runs into the Smilers following on 26th May.
The shooting block concluded on the 30th May with the images for Medway Junction and the Winder's key room then resumed on 28 June with the scenes in the toilet.
A series of pick ups were done in August for the Doctor's flight down the side of the building.

Part one was completed just ahead of posting in July. Part two was finished on 22 August.

The junction box was originally Clapham Junction but when I decided to set the story in 'Kent' I switched it to Ashford Junction and then to Medway Junction which actually exists.

There was a few bits of dialogue changed, as always with these stories.

The story is set on 3299. Three years after The Beast Below. The date on the back of the newspapers is 23 July, the date that part one was posted online.
In terms of the Doctor and Amy's continuity, we are still in series 5 and this story continues from the previous Amy Alone.
